The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to implement stricter rules for issuing and updating Aadhaar cards, especially for adult applicants. This move comes amid concerns over lenient verification processes that previously allowed potential misuse of the identification system.
As part of the new framework, UIDAI will introduce a second layer of authentication by cross-verifying applicant information through multiple official databases, including those linked to passports, PAN cards, MNREGA records, driving licences, and electricity bills.
The revised guidelines aim to tighten Aadhaar’s integrity as a reliable identity and address growing demands for more secure identity verification practices.
Officials stated that these changes are designed to ensure that only genuine Indian residents are issued Aadhaar numbers and that updates to existing Aadhaar details are carried out with maximum security.
The new system will particularly focus on verifying identity for those who update or apply for Aadhaar beyond the age of 18.This initiative follows UIDAI’s internal assessment, which flagged concerns that the current system lacked adequate checks and balances.
While Aadhaar enrolment for adults has reached 99.5% saturation, UIDAI believes that additional safeguards are necessary to maintain the authenticity of the Aadhaar ecosystem and prevent duplication or fraudulent usage.
The changes are expected to be rolled out in phases, with integration of various government databases into the Aadhaar verification process. Authorities believe this multi-point verification will enhance transparency and help prevent misuse of the national ID for illegal or fraudulent purposes.
