Uppilipalayam Junction Gets Back Its Traffic Signals to Reduce Congestion
Coimbatore City Police have reintroduced traffic signals at the Uppilipalayam Junction, one of the city’s busiest intersections, to streamline vehicle movement and reduce traffic congestion. The decision was taken after continuous monitoring and analysis by the city traffic wing, following complaints from daily commuters and local residents.
Why the Change Was Needed
The Uppilipalayam roundabout connects major routes leading to Avinashi Road, Trichy Road, and Race Course, making it one of the most critical points in Coimbatore’s transport network. Over the past few months, heavy traffic during peak hours had become a major concern, leading to delays, confusion, and occasional accidents.
To address this, the Coimbatore City Police decided to reintroduce traffic signals at the junction, replacing the free-flowing roundabout system that had been in place for several years.
Details of the New System
According to officials, three new traffic signals have been installed at key entry points of the Uppilipalayam Junction. These signals will manage and regulate vehicle flow from:
- J.D. Naidu Memorial area, handling vehicles coming from Avinashi Road.
- Trichy Road, which carries a high volume of buses and commercial vehicles.
- Avarampalayam and Ramanathapuram routes, covering vehicles heading towards the city center and railway station areas.
Each signal will operate with smart timing technology, adjusting the signal duration based on real-time traffic density.
Impact on Commuters
The reintroduction of signals aims to bring better coordination, reduced waiting times, and improved safety for both motorists and pedestrians. City traffic police have requested commuters to cooperate during the initial days as the new system stabilizes.
Motorists traveling between Avarampalayam, Avinashi Road, and Trichy Road can expect smoother vehicle movement once the signals are fully synchronized.
Officials’ Statement
Traffic officials mentioned that the move is part of a broader plan to modernize Coimbatore’s traffic management. After observing significant congestion near the Uppilipalayam Junction, the team decided to implement a hybrid control system combining manual monitoring and automated signal coordination.
They also noted that the newly installed lights are part of an advanced setup that could later integrate with Coimbatore’s Smart City traffic control project, allowing real-time adjustments through AI-based traffic management systems.
Public Response
While some drivers initially expressed concerns about increased waiting time at signals, most commuters welcomed the change, noting that organized vehicle flow is far better than chaotic roundabout driving.
Shopkeepers and residents near the junction also appreciated the move, citing fewer honks, reduced pollution, and safer pedestrian crossings.
What’s Next for Coimbatore Traffic
Coimbatore City Police plan to extend this smart signal initiative to other busy junctions such as Peelamedu, Lakshmi Mills, and Sungam in the coming months. With the success of the Uppilipalayam model, the city could see a wider rollout of AI-based signal systems aimed at reducing travel time and improving safety across major routes.
This marks another important step in Coimbatore’s journey toward becoming a Smart Traffic City, combining technology, infrastructure, and public awareness to build a safer and more efficient urban transport network.
