Mumbai, July 15, 2025 – Tesla officially entered the Indian automobile market today with the launch of its Model Y electric SUV. The company inaugurated its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, marking a significant step in Tesla’s expansion into one of the world’s largest automotive markets.
The Model Y will be available in two variants:- Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) priced at ₹59.90 lakh (ex-showroom), and
- Long-Range RWD at ₹67.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
Both models are being imported as Completely Built Units (CBUs) from Tesla’s Shanghai facility in China. The RWD version offers a range of approximately 500 km (WLTP) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Long-Range variant provides up to 622 km of range with a 0-100 km/h time of 5.6 seconds.
Deliveries are expected to begin in Q3 2025, with initial availability in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Bookings are now open through Tesla’s official India website.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the inauguration ceremony and welcomed Tesla’s presence in the state, emphasizing its alignment with the government’s vision for a greener future.
Despite its premium pricing-driven largely by high import duties-Tesla’s launch reflects rising interest in luxury electric vehicles in India. The company is reportedly in ongoing talks with the Indian government to explore future local manufacturing opportunities.
Tesla’s entry adds momentum to India’s evolving EV ecosystem, joining global luxury players such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi in a market still developing its electric infrastructure.
