Coimbatore: Due to the continuous rainfall over the past few days, rainwater has stagnated on several main and interior roads across Coimbatore city. The stagnant water has led to severe damage to the road surfaces, causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians alike.
Following complaints from residents, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has initiated swift action to repair the affected areas. Municipal workers have begun filling up potholes and damaged sections with gravel and concrete to ensure smoother passage for vehicles.
Officials stated that the rainwater drainage system in certain parts of the city was unable to handle the heavy inflow of water, resulting in temporary flooding. In some low-lying areas, vehicles found it difficult to move due to the accumulation of water and road erosion.
The civic body has deployed maintenance teams across all major zones to carry out emergency patchwork and to clear blocked drains. The authorities have assured that permanent road resurfacing will be taken up once the rains subside completely.
Local residents have welcomed the immediate response but have requested a long-term solution to prevent recurring road damage during the monsoon season. They urged the Corporation to strengthen the city’s stormwater drainage infrastructure to withstand heavy downpours.
The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation also appealed to the public to cooperate by avoiding dumping of waste into drainage channels, which often leads to clogging and water stagnation.
The ongoing repair work is expected to be completed in stages, covering the most affected areas first, including main thoroughfares and residential colonies.
With more rainfall expected in the coming days, the Corporation has put its emergency response teams on alert to tackle any further waterlogging or infrastructure issues.
