Karnataka plans beach makeover: Shacks, nightlife, and relaxed alcohol rules to boost tourism
Karnataka is all set to adopt certain changes, and go Goa way in a move to attract more tourists. For this the tourism department is considering numerous options to ensure tourists make the most out of their Karnataka trip. Read on to find out more.
Introduction of shacks on Karnataka beaches
The Karnataka tourism department is considering significant changes to boost beach tourism, similar to the success seen in Goa. One of the key changes under review is the introduction of shacks on Karnataka’s beaches. These shacks are popular attractions in Goa, offering tourists a relaxed beachside experience with food, drinks, and music.
Alcohol consumption on beaches
As per the reports, the tourism agency will likely permit consumption alcohol on Karnataka’s beaches in addition to shacks, which would likely draw more tourists. Alcohol consumption is not permitted as of now, and removing these limits will likely help to improve beach tourism, particularly in places like Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
Impact on tourist footfall
Referring to this, Rajendra KV, Director of the Karnataka Tourism Department and Managing Director of Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), stated that these changes will likely be part of a new tourism policy aimed at increasing the footfall of tourists. The primary goal is to make Karnataka’s beaches as popular as those in Goa by providing a more relaxed and safe atmosphere for visitors.\
Extended beach hours
At the Connect 2024 event, stakeholders requested that the restrictions on beach timings be eased. Rajendra acknowledged that allowing tourists to spend more time on the beaches, especially at night, could enhance the beach tourism experience. Dakshina Kannada DC Mullai Muhilan MP mentioned that beach hours in Mangaluru city have already been extended until 1 am, but further consultation with the police department will determine why people are restricted after 9 pm in other areas.
Enhancing safety with streetlights
To make sure visitors are comfortable when they visit the beaches at night, the tourism department intends to install more streetlights. Better illumination at night would make it easier to access the beaches, encouraging longer stays and increasing visitor participation.
Promoting tent tourism
Additionally, Rajendra gave district officials instructions to find government and private land parcels for the purpose of developing tent tourism throughout Karnataka. It is anticipated that this action will broaden the state’s tourism services, providing travellers with additional lodging choices while fostering a connection with the natural world.
Fast-tracking clearances for tourism projects
Simplifying procedures for tourist-related projects is a priority for the tourism department. The opening of a facilitation centre is planned to speed up the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and other required clearances, facilitating the advancement of tourism projects.
