A major traffic disruption occurred today in Coimbatore’s Gandhipuram area after an electric pole collapsed near V.K.K. Menon Road due to heavy rain and strong winds. The incident caused temporary chaos as vehicles were halted and pedestrians were advised to avoid the stretch for safety reasons.
According to eyewitnesses, the electric pole suddenly fell onto the road, blocking traffic and damaging a portion of the sidewalk. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) officials quickly arrived at the scene to disconnect the power supply and start clearance work.
The Coimbatore City Police immediately cordoned off the area to prevent accidents and redirected vehicles through alternate routes. The TNEB workers are currently repairing the pole and restoring power to the affected locality.
Residents of Gandhipuram have urged authorities to inspect and reinforce old electric poles in the area to prevent similar incidents during the monsoon season.
Authorities have requested the public to cooperate until the repair and traffic management work is completed.
This incident highlights the importance of infrastructure maintenance and timely inspection, especially before heavy rains, to ensure public safety across Coimbatore.
