The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has finalized plans to establish two new bus stands at Ukkadam, located on either side of the Ukkadam-Aathupalam flyover.
The project, estimated at ₹21.55 crore, is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving passenger amenities in the city.
One bus stand will be situated near the Ukkadam police station to serve both local and inter-district buses, while the second will be built on land opposite the station, formerly used as a fish market, to primarily cater to town buses.
Each terminus will accommodate between 70 and 80 buses and will include facilities such as waiting halls, food courts, restrooms, mothers’ rooms, parking areas, and commercial outlets.
The initiative aligns with the planned Coimbatore Metro Rail project, in which Ukkadam is a central hub for multiple corridors. The original Ukkadam bus stand was partially demolished in 2018 during the construction of the flyover, creating a pressing need for the new twin facilities.
Tendering for the project has commenced, and the corporation plans to award contracts soon to begin work promptly.
The new stands are expected to streamline urban transport and complement the city’s upcoming integrated transport system.
